Redefining A Community

"Be the change you want to see in the world."
    -Mahatma Gandhi

Pitch.

What does it mean to be a child? being a child means that you can laugh, play freely and make mistakes and learn from them because your only a child. In Honduras specifically in Francisco Morazan Department kids are not allowed to be kids. they cant play freely in the streets without their lives endangered. they cant make mistakes without having their life threatened. they cannot run inside and seek the help of their parents because the parents are most likely to be dead because of the high murder rates that is associated with Honduras. That's where things need to end, and that's where we come in. My idea is to create community centers all around Honduras that offer programs where kids can come and play laugh and make mistakes. these programs will include everyday basics such as reading, writing, and comprehension of the English language because the literacy rate is 85.1 % and is decreasing year by year. Other programs will be based on physical education. In Honduras there are 2 body types which are both not healthy. studies show that 8% of children under the age of 5 are underweight and and 46% of children 15 and older are obese. So with this program we can promote a happy medium that its not okay to be obese and its not okay to be under the average weight for a child. The final program that we will be offering at these community centers are the breakfast club. 4 % of children die of malnutrition before the age of 5.By offering this breakfast club children can come and eat in the morning and get the nutrients that they need so they don't go the whole day hungry. by doing that we can decrease the amount of malnutrition kids there is in Honduras.

Critical Need.

there are many reasons why kids deserve to be kids. One reason is because unlike us Canadians, the children in Honduras are forced to grow up too fast. They are forced to take on responsibility that they half of the time they don't even understand. A major factor in this problem is violence.  Honduras is one of the most violent countries in central America. so violent that in 2012 there were 7,172 in Honduras which was 68 more than 2011. so because of these high murder rates kids are forced to join a gang to save their lives or they are killed. The second reason is because of unemployment. Unemployment is a huge problem in Honduras. the reason for this is because if the parents don't have a job how can they provide for their children? that's where the kids come in and try to help their parents out by begging, and stealing to try and help their family, which shouldn't be their main priority because they are "just kids".

Impact.

How will the world benefit from this?

If the children of Honduras get the chance to stay kids it will definitely impact the world. with the programs offered these kids will be able to change the world.Living in this new era the older folks don't really understand what its like to grow up in the 21st century and with opportunities offered through these programs the children of Honduras will be able to become more than their country and make it better, and it will not only effect their country but all of central America. With these programs eventually kids will have the opportunity to create positive change.

Feasibility.

Project time period- in order to build a 1000 sq ft community center  it should take about half a year and a little bit. but because of the fact that we are putting 3  community centers in Honduras it should take about a year and a half.

Start- February 2014

Finish- August 2016

Building The Community Center

Suppliers-
Rona- thought the building process we will be using rona as on of our main suppliers Rona. Rona gives out grants to people in need and because this community center is helping out kids in need they would probably be happy to help us out.

Home Depot- hopefully home depot will be able to be our other main supplier for the project. Home depot has this program which is called " The Home Depot Foundation.". this program offers up to 25,00 dollars to Canadian charities to build buildings. Hopefully they will be willing to grant us that 25,00 dollars to buy products and materials to make this project a success.

Estimated Cost- 30,00.00 for  Construction materials

Suppliers-

Staples- I would love for staples to provide us with school supplies because they have a program called the "Staples Foundation". this program gives out grants to organisations and people who help underprivileged children.

Supply Costs.

Pencils- (24 pack)cost- $2.00 x 75 = $150.00
Erasers-(2 pack) Cost-$1.00 x 75= $75.00
lined paper (pack of 200) Cost- $2.32 x 95 =$220.04

Total cost for supplies =$444.04

Ikea - even though ikea doesn't have any programs that gives out grants to underprivileged kids ikea is still an amazing company that would be a huge help with the decor of the community center.

Supply Costs.

 shelves-$318.. x 3 =$954.00
kid storage holders- $149.00 x 2 = $298.0
kitchen-$2380.00

Total costs for supply's= $3632.00

Toys-R-Us- Having Toys-R-us on board with this project would be great because Toys-R-Us has a program called the "Toys-R-Us Children's Fund which helps keep children safe and helps them when they are in need. so by getting a grant by them it will help us purchase toys that the children would love to play with!

Cost for toys -

Swing set- $1,299.99
Play-Doh sets -$9.97 x 4=$39.88
Board games-$19.99 x 6=$119.94
Balls - 5.99 x 30 =179.07

Total cost for toys=$130337.89

Another Supplier-
another supplier would be Anglina Jolie and Brad Pitt. the reason for this is because they know what its like to help a child in need. well in their case multiple children in need. they have adopted children from all over the world and taken them under their wing so that those kids can have a better life and pitching the idea to them might make them want to help!

GRAND TOTAL- $134443.93

My name is Annastacia Smith-Richards I was born in Vancouver, BC. i play basketball , track and field and soccer. I currently attend Bill Crothers Secondary School. My goals later on in the future are to go to the states for basketball or soccer. If sports don't work out i plan on taking a 2 year college paramedic program. I am a firm believer that children should not take on responsibilities bigger than themselves.
